Mike Thew:
Considerable international experience including three years (1978 – 1981) at revered North American stud Spendthrift Farm as well as management roles including a six-year stint at Wakefield in the NSW Upper Hunter has enabled Mike to garner a wealth of knowledge and experience. In the latter role, Mike was one of the first managers in the Hunter Valley to adopt and promote the practice of walking in mares to visit stallions. He holds a Diploma of Applied Science – Agriculture from Wagga Wagga Agricultural College (now Charles Sturt University) and a Graduate Certificate in Financial Management also from CSU.
At Spendthrift in Kentucky, Mike managed client broodmares, and this instilled in him the importance of quality husbandry and management of breeding stock and the enormous potential the international breeding industry has and the part Australia can play in the realisation of that potential.
For the past ten years Mike has been employed by Scone Equine Studies Centre as head teacher, training staff for the horse industry and maintaining close links with the breeding and racing industries.
Mike’s expertise in the areas of breeding, mating planning and pasture management balance the varied skills Mia brings to the Crowningstone team.
